Conviction vs Condemnation

We have probably all heard that the Holy Spirit convicts but the devil condemns. However, sometimes the devil will come as a religious spirit, even masquerading as the Holy Spirit. Here is a little excursion into identifying which spirit is speaking to us.

James 3:13-18 KJV Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. (14) But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. (15) This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. (16) For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. (17) But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (18) And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Notice that the wisdom from above is always peaceable but the wisdom from below brings confusion and anxiety. This is the one of the big keys to recognizing which spirit is speaking.

John 14:26-27 KJV But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (27) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Notice the purpose of the Holy Spirit is to teach us, and to teach us about Jesus, and this is to lead us into peace.

The Holy Spirit won’t ask you to do something that is too difficult for you to do. This was like the pharisees did in the following scripture:

Matthew 23:2-4 NASB saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; (3) therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. (4) “They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

1 Corinthians 10:13-14 KJV (13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (14) Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

An overbearing spirit that wants to put a heavy load on you is not the Holy Spirit. A spirit that wants to lead you back to slavery to sin is also not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will always communicate in line with the word of God.
