Rebelling against religion

Luke 23:13-18 NASB Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, (14) and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. (15) “No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. (16) “Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” (17) [Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.] (18) But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!”

The chief priests handed over Jesus to Pilate under the charge of inciting the people to rebellion.  However Jesus was never preached against the Roman empire.  In fact at one stage the people wanted to make Jesus a king but he slipped away, not taking up the people in the offer.

John 6:15 NASB So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.

However, he was rebelling against a system of religion, breaking some of the religious ordinances that the pharisees imposed on the people.

Luke 6:1-5 NASB Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. (2) But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” (3) And Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, (4) how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” (5) And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

And Jesus also healed on the Sabbath which infuriated the Pharisees even more.

What I’ve noticed is how often religious people want to control us. They say unless you believe and do what we say you cannot be saved. The same thing happened in the book of Acts.

Acts 15:1 NASB Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”

These religious people, who are not operating in the Spirit, want to impose a system of religion from the outside, on to other people. However, the Lord wants us to be transformed from the inside out. Its a heart transformation, not an imposing of a system of religion from the outside.

1 Corinthians 7:23 NASB (23) You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.

Colossians 2:20-23 NASB (20) If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, (21) “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” (22) (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)–in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? (23) These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

No wonder, when the religious people had Jesus on trial, that there charge was inciting the people to rebellion.  They were jealous of the spiritual freedom they were receiving from the Lord.  It was rebelling against the system of control, imposed by the religious leaders, for sure.  Beware of those that want to put a yoke on you, that is not of God, and to steal your freedom in Christ.
